statement and assumption problems with solutions

As you know, most of the students get confused while solving statement and assumption problems in competitive exams. So noticing that, here I am sharing statement and assumption problems with solutions to improve your performance.

You can easily understand the topic by these problems with solutions which will help you to solve questions in the competitive exams. So, let's practice and know how to solve statement and assumption problems.

Problems with Solutions of Statement Assumption

An assumption is the hidden part of an argument and something supposed or taken for grant.

In these types of questions, a statement is followed by two or more assumptions. Candidates are required to access the given statement and decide which of the given assumption implicit directly in the statement.

Keep in Mind

● Statement is part of our speech of which most of the ideas remain unexpressed.

● Assumption is something in which the reader assume something on the basis of the given statement.

● If statement and assumption are not co-related then it is not implicit validity

● Assumption is always positive regarding the completion of the work favouring the executor.

● Request/Order/Advise is considered valid in the case of assumption.

Ex.1. In the given question a statement is followed by two assumption numbered 1 and 2. An assumption is something supposed or taken for granted. You have to decide which of the following assumption is implicit in the statement.

Statement

In city ‘Z’ people prefer to buy car ‘X’ instead of car ‘Y’ as car ‘X’ has German Technology which is very advanced.

Assumption

1. Cars with German Technology are perceived to be better than other cars in city Z.

2. Had German Technology been present in car ‘Y’ also, it’s sales would have crossed car ‘X’s sales.

(A) If only 1 is implicit

(B) If only 2 is implicit

(C) If both 1 and 2 are implicit

(D) If neither 1 or 2 is implicit

Ans: A

Solution.

It seems that German Technology is better than other technology, so it would increase the sale of car ‘X’, So assumption 1 is implicit while assumption 2 indicates the possible result of the sale which cannot be assumed.

Remember

● Sometimes assumptions are contrary to their statement or not connected with the statement and can easily be rejected.

● An assumption is invalid if it is a mere restatement putting it in different words of given statement.

● The given assumption is invalid if it is an inference derivable form given statement

● An assumption is invalid if it uses farfetched reasoning.

Practice Question with Solution

Direction (1-2): In following questions, one statement is given

Q.1. Statement

Politicians become rich by the votes of the people.

Assumptions

1. People vote to make politicians rich.

2. Politicians become rich by their virtue.

(A) Only assumption 1 is implicit

(B) Only assumption 2 is implicit

(C) Both assumption 1 and 2 are implicit

(D) Both assumption 1 and 2 are implicit

Ans .  A

In statement, it is strictly said that politicians become rich due to votes of the people which is fully implemented in the assumption 1. Assumption 2 is not directly related to statement. So, only assumption 1 is implicit.

Q.2. Two statements are given followed by four assumptions. Select the alternative which is most appropriate.

Statements

1. India is becoming industrialised.

2. Pollution is a problem associated with industrialisation.

Assumptions

1. All industrial centres are polluted.

2. India is polluted.

3. Polluted nations are industrialised.

4. India may become polluted.

(A) All assumptions are appropriate

(B) None assumption is appropriate

(C) Only assumption 4 is appropriate

(D) Only assumption 2 is appropriate

Ans .  C

Only assumption 4 can be drawn from the given statements

Direction(Q.3.): In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered 1 and 2. Consider the statement and decide which of the given assumptions is implicit.

Q.3. Statement

It is faster to travel by air to Delhi from Bangalore.

Assumptions

1. Bangalore and Delhi are connected by air.

2. There are no other means of transport available to Delhi from Bangalore.

(A) if only assumption 1 is implicit;

(B) if only assumption 2 is implicit;

(C) if either 1 or 2 is implicit;

(D) if neither I nor II is implicit and

(E) if both 1 and 2 are implicit.

Ans .  A

The statement advises to travel by air between the two cities. So, I is implicit. Besides, It talks of air transport being a faster means of travel. This means that other means of transport, slower than air transport, are available. So, II is not implicit 2 is not implicit.

Direction (10-11): In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer

(A) If only assumption I is implicit

(B) If only assumption II is implicit

(C) If either I or II is implicit

(D) If neither I nor II is implicit

(E) If both I and II are implicit.

Q.5. Statement:

A warning in a train compartment - "To stop train, pull chain. Penalty for improper use Rs. 500."

Assumptions:

1. Some people misuse the alarm chain.

2. On certain occasions, people may want to stop a running train.

(A) Only assumption I is implicit

(B) Only assumption II is implicit

(C) Either I or II is implicit

(D) Neither I nor II is implicit

(E) Both I and II are implicit

Ans . E

Clearly, the penalty is imposed to prevent people from misusing the alarm chain. This means that some people misuse it. So, I is implicit. The alarm chain is provided to stop the running train in times of urgency. So, II is also implicit.

Q.6. Statement:

The State government has decided to appoint four thousand primary school teachers during the next financial year.

Assumptions:

1. There are enough schools in the state to accommodate four thousand additional primary school teachers.

2. The eligible candidates may not be interested to apply as the government may not finally appoint such a large number of primary school teachers.

(A) Only assumption I is implicit

(B) Only assumption II is implicit

(C) Either I or II is implicit

(D) Neither I nor II is implicit

(E) Both I and II are implicit

Ans .   A

Such decisions as given in the statement are taken only after taking the existing vacancies into consideration. So, I implicit while II isn't.

Q.7. Statement:

The concession in rail fares for the journey to hill stations has been cancelled because it is not needed for people who can spend their holidays there.

Assumptions:

Railways should give concession only to needy persons.

Railways should not encourage people to spend their holidays at hill stations.

(A) Only assumption I is implicit

(B) Only assumption II is implicit

(C) Either I or II is implicit

(D) Neither I nor II is implicit

(E) Both I and II are implicit

Ans .   A

The statement mentions that concessions should not be given to people who can afford to spend holidays in hill stations. This means they should be given only to needy persons. So, I is implicit. But, II does not follow from the statement and is not implicit.

Q.8. Statement:

If it is easy to become an engineer, I don't want to be an engineer.

Assumptions:

1. An individual aspires to be professional.

2. One desires to achieve a thing which is hard earned.

(A) Only assumption I is implicit

(B) Only assumption II is implicit

(C) Either I or II is implicit

(D) Neither I nor II is implicit

(E) Both I and II are implicit

Ans .   B

Clearly, nothing is mentioned about the professional nature of the job. So, I is not implicit. The statement hints that one rejects a thing that is easy to achieve. So, II is implicit.

Q.9. Statement:

"The bridge was built at the cost of Rs. 128 crores and even civil bus service is not utilizing it, what a pity to see it grossly underutilized." - A citizen's view on a new flyover linking east and west sides of a suburb.

Assumptions:

The building of such bridges does not serve any public objective.

There has to be some accountability and utility of money spent on public projects.

(A) Only assumption I is implicit

(B) Only assumption II is implicit

(C) Either I or II is implicit

(D) Neither I nor II is implicit

(E) Both I and II are implicit

Ans .  B

Clearly, the statement expresses grave concern over a newly-built flyover not being utilized by public. This implies that such projects need to be taken up only after working out their utility and that the huge expenditure incurred on building such structures is worthwhile only if they prove useful for the public. Thus, only II is implicit.
